The Theatre group Nandonik celebrates nearly five decades of artistry, activism, and aesthetic excellence.
One of Bangladesh’s most enduring theatre troupes, Nandonik Nattya Shomproday, celebrates its 48th founding anniversary this year — marking almost half a century of tireless dedication to meaningful theatre. Founded on October 16, 1977, Nandonik has remained steadfast in its artistic mission through decades of social, political, and cultural change.
The group began its journey with the play Amar Sonar Horin Chai, setting a strong foundation for the socially conscious productions that would follow. Over the years, Nandonik has staged numerous acclaimed plays, including Roktokorobi, Shasti, Nripoti, Cleopatra, Mohabidroho, and Samrat Bahadur Shah Zafar — each reflecting the group’s passion for artistic depth and historical awareness.
Speaking about the milestone, A. M. M. Hasanuzzaman, founder and current chief of Nandonik, said,
“From the beginning, our goal was to bring aesthetically rich theatre—both local and international—to the Bangladeshi stage. Our productions may be fewer in number, but we have never compromised on quality. Though not all our dreams have been realized, I firmly believe our younger members will carry Nandonik forward with renewed energy and vision.”
Senior member Badruddoza described Nandonik as more than just a theatre troupe:
“Nandonik is a family where members are shaped not only as performers but as humane, socially responsible individuals. Theatre here is not only about acting—it’s about nurturing patriotic and ethical human beings.”
To mark the anniversary, Nandonik is hosting a discussion and cultural evening today (Monday, October 20) at the Studio Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, bringing together members, theatre enthusiasts, and well-wishers to celebrate the troupe’s creative journey.
Production manager and emerging filmmaker Sohel Rana Boyati said, “Alongside stage productions, our members have recently started making films. I was fortunate to direct one of them. This reflects Nandonik’s spirit—where dedication is valued, and creativity is encouraged.”
For nearly five decades, Nandonik Nattya Shomproday has embodied beauty, intellect, and conscience on stage—proving that theatre, beyond entertainment, remains a mirror to society and the human soul.
