Nabinagar traditional pottery on the verge of extinction

At one time, the pottery of Nabinagar Upazila of Brahmanbaria was famous all over the country. The traditional potters of Nabinagar are going to be endangered due to various adversities.

Bholachong, Narayanpur, Sohata, Velanagar, Ibrahimpur, Srirampur, Bitghar, Srighar and other villages of this upazila were the heart of pottery. At least 5,000 potters in these villages were busy day and night in making handicraft. Craftsmen skillfully carved deer, elephants, cows, tubs, pots, bowls, cups, pitchers, etc.

The dolls made by them were supplied not only to Brahmanbaria district but also to various districts including Dhaka.

But now, aluminum and plastic materials have taken the place of clay pots. Although the price of these is high, they are more durable.

Therefore, the current market has been occupied by aluminum and plastic products. Talking to a potter, it is known that the potters of Nabinagar are forced to leave their traditional profession due to the current adversities.

Now only a few hundred industries hold on to their ancestral profession. Along with the poor state of their profession, a great disaster has come in their family life.

Besides, the price of pottery has increased several times. If the production cost is several times higher, the selling price has not increased at that rate.

As a result, it has become difficult for the traditional potters to survive in this profession. In various adversities, many are leaving this profession.
