Myanmar’s visiting officials have expressed their desire to take back Rohingyas from Bangladesh and they are prepared to start the registration process as of now. However, the Rohingya population is still hesitant to go back for the fear of their safety. Furthermore, they have demanded immediate citizenship, placement in jobs and other facilities and unless their demands are fulfilled they won’t go back.
Bangladesh foreign minister Dr. AK Abdul Momen the Rohingya citizenship issue was an internal affair of Myanmar and Bangladesh would not like to be taken hostage on the matter. Bangladesh Foreign Secretary Kamrul Ahsan Myanmar needs to build trust among Rohingyas, a major issue, and need to continue such visit to solve these issues.
Bangladesh is not pressurizing or forcing Rohingyas to go back. However, in order to repatriate them to their homeland, Myanmar must address their concerns of safety and specific demands. The international community must continue to put pressure on Myanmar to the dignified return of the Rohingyas possible.
It is a great sign and a laudable achievement of our country’s diplomats that Myanmar has finally agreed to a reasonable solution to the Rohingya refugee crisis. The representatives on both sides must continue to work in good faith to resolve this complex and sensitive issue.
Bangladesh’s humanitarian response in giving shelter to Rohingyas must be recognized by the international community as well as by Myanmar. They must also realize the strain it is putting on our economy and national security.
Repatriation of Rohingyas might be on the horizon, but the process must be conducted in a way that ensures the safety and dignity of the millions of Rohingyas who have suffered greatly in the last few years. Both the government of Bangladesh and Myanmar must keep the plight of the Rohingyas in mind when it comes to taking any kind of decision.
