Muzaffar Ahmed no more

A lifelong crusader for the cause of the people and country’s one of the legendary politician Professor Muzaffar Ahmad passed away on Friday night at Apollo Hospitals in Dhaka. Muzaffar Ahmad, who struggled throughout his life upholding the spirit of socialism, breathed his last at 8:00pm while undergoing treatment at the hospital, party joint general secretary Ismail Hossain told the media. He was 97.

He was one of the pioneers of the independent struggle of Bangladesh and also was the president of Bangladesh National Awami Party (NAP). Muzaffar Ahmad was the last surviving member of the advisory council of exile government during the war of independence in 1971. He had struggled through his life for the betterment of the people.

The veteran politician who was suffering from old age complications for the past few years was shifted to the intensive care unit of the hospital as his condition deteriorated on Tuesday night. Muzaffar Ahmad was born on April 14 in 1922 at Alahbad village under Debidwar upazila in Cumilla. He was admitted to hospital on August 14.

President Md Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in separate messages expressed their condolence at the demise of the veteran leader, one of the greatest and noble politicians that Bangladesh ever produced. He also played crucial role during the Language Movement in 1952. He was a brilliant student of the Economics Department of University of Dhaka and obtained MA with BA (Hons.) in Economics with distinction. He was a teacher in the Economics Department of Dhaka University in 1952-54.
