Following the edible oil price increase globally, the country’s farmers are now increasing mustard cultivation in the country. This time huge amount of land has been brought under the mustard cultivation which indicates that mustard import may declined by 50 percent.

While talking about the safe food as chief guest at a seminar on ‘Family Guide to Safe Food’ organized by Bangladesh Food Safety Authority (BFSA) Food Minister Sadhan Chandra Majumdar came up with such optimism on Tuesday. Food Secretary Ismail Hossain, BFSA Chairman Abdul Qayyum Sarkar, Director General of Food Directorate Shakhawat Hossain was present.

He said, “Huge lands have been brought under mustard cultivation in Naogaon, Rangpur, Kurigarm and other districts. Each inch of land is covered with yellow mustard flowers. Hope this will reduce edible oil dependency in the coming days.”

Citing that the authorities concerned are trying to inform people about safe food to stay healthy the minister suggested stopping eating fatty fried foods. At the same time he also urged people to consume safe and moderate food for good health.

He said, “The tastier the food, the more unsafe it is. You can get through the day even with moderate meals. But I am not talking about not eating. No one dies without eating, one dies by eating too much. So we should eat moderate and safe food. Our effort is because many people do not know which food is safe.”  He also said that if a 5-minute class on safe food and drugs is taken in schools, if information is given about safe food in mosque madrasas, then it will be very beneficial. According to the Food Safety Authority, the guidelines cover issues related to food selection and procurement. It includes information on purchasing raw food to packaged food, food storage, how long food can be kept in the refrigerator, how to store it.

Apart from this, the book also mentions about the correct method of food preparation and cooking. Under the private initiative the authority aims to prevent 1 million guidelines within the next year. Links to PDF files of these guidelines are available on various government websites. And the information provided in the guide is subject to correction and modification.
