Mustard flowers spreading colours of winter in Chuadanga

Mustard flowers have been spreading yellow colors from mustard crop fields on vast areas of land under Chuadanga district in winter season. Farmers are hoping bumper production of mustard for this reason. There are fertile land in the upazilas of Chuadanga sadar, Alamdanga, Damurhuda and Jibannagar for mustard cultivation.  So many farmers cultivate mustard in their lands. 

Various fields of the areas have been visited on the spot by the correspondent. While visiting the fields the correspondent saw that the crop fields of the areas have become full of yellow mustard flowers. Blooms of mustard flowers have been stretched across the fields. 

According to District Agriculture Extension Department, farmers have cultivated mustard on 3075 hectares of land in four upazilas of Chuadanga district. Of the total 260 hectares of land has been brought under mustard cultivation in sadar upazila, 2125 hectares of land in Alamdanga upazila, 350 hectares of land in Damurhuda upazila and 350 hectares of land in Jibannagar upazila. 

On the other hand 5244.5 metric tons of mustard production has been fixed this season in the district. Due to favor of climate and weather the production target of mustard may be achieved, farmers added. 

Within a few more days, mustard will go to the farmers’ house after being harvested.  Once upon a time, farmers only cultivated aus paddy, amon paddy, some vegetables pulses, mustard in their fields whole year as many lands were lying fallow. But now a days farmers are cultivating according to national demands, no lands are lying fallow.   

Some farmers said the growers have developed to cultivate mustard due to increase of government facilities in farming this crop. Moreover, as this farming provides low cost and high profit they are becoming interested in mustard farming.

The knowledgeable persons said to take steps for increasing mustard cultivation for meeting edible oil, these steps are: bringing more land under mustard cultivation; introducing high-yielding mustard varieties; launching a comprehensive campaign to educate the consumers about the health benefits of mustard oil; and using good quality of mustard seeds.  

Deputy Director of the DAE Bevash Chandra Saha said cultivators of the district are interesting to cultivate the crops on their lands due to its easy cultivation process.

High market price is also one of the factors in cultivating mustard, he added.
