The gang accused in shipping worker Mahabub murder case is ruling Shitolakhya River and extorting toll from all river vessels in the name of different organisations.
Slain Mahabub’s widow Razia Begum had filed a murder case with Bandar Police Station in Narayanganj accusing 11 people on February 5 this year after receiving post mortem report.
Police inspector Md. Shafiqul Islam had submitted charge sheet to the court accusing all 11 on July 31. Of them 10 people have suffered imprisonment and are now at large on bail. But the accused number 3, Sobuj Shikder, the ringleader of the gang haven’t yet been imprisoned, even though he is on extended bail till November 21.
The petitioner Razia Begum and deceased’s elder brother Hafizur Rahman expressed grave concern over the free movement of murder accused Sobuj Shikder. Hafiz also claimed that Sobuj Shikder is an extortionist and he collects toll from all ships plying in Shitolakhya.
A shipping worker anonymously told the Bangladesh Post that Sobuj Shikder and his associates are involved with criminal activities, toll extortion, fake arbitration and other illicit activities making all river transport owners hostage by force.
Mahabub was a shipping worker, resident of Ekrampur area under Bandar upazila, who was murdered on January 30 at his own residence.
The court inspector Md. Asaduzzaman confirmed that Sobuj Shikder’s prison bail is extended till charge sheet hearing day November 21. He added that the other accused have went into police remand and suffered imprisonment.
