Mahfuz Alam, a three-time Union Parishad chairman from Munshirhat Union (Ward-8), Chauddagram, Cumilla—also a close aide of former Railways Minister Mujibul Haque—was arrested at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport while attempting to flee the country late Wednesday night.

Acting on a tip-off, immigration police, in coordination with detectives, detained Mahfuz as he attempted to cross immigration. He was later handed over to the Cumilla CID office.

According to Chauddagram police, Mahfuz Alam is a fugitive accused in eight cases, including murder, and had been on the run for an extended period. Locals alleged that during the previous government’s tenure, he secured his chairmanship through electoral malpractice and played a key role in facilitating the former minister’s re-election via vote rigging.

Assistant Superintendent of Police Md. Mainuddin Khan of Cumilla CID confirmed the arrest and the multiple charges.
