Munshiganj farmers busy with potato cultivation

Farmers are busy planting potato seeds in Munshiganj. More than half a lakh farmers in the district are involved in this work. This time the farmers are busier in planting potatoes to make up for the losses during the coronation period.

It is learned that about half of the total potato production of the country is produced in Munshiganj district. Although there was a loss in potato last year, the farmers did not lose interest. As they benefited from potato cultivation last year, they believe that this time good price will be available for potato. However, the potato growers of the district said that they would not have to bear the loss if the government buys potatoes or subsidizes them. 

They also said that the cost of production would have been lower if the government had reduced the prices of all types of fertilizers.

It is known that potato is cultivated in 6 Upazilas of Munshiganj. The main cash crop of the district is potato. Apart from meeting the demand of the people of this region, the farmers of Munshiganj are providing the crop in all parts of the country.

The farmers of Mollakandi, Charkewar, Nalbuniyakandi, Turkey, Banglabazar, Bakultala, Aldi, Pura, Betka, Outshahi, Baligaon, Chanderbazar, Basudia, Louhjong, Malkhanagar, Gazaria and Srinagar areas of the district have been talking to the farmers. Read. Most of the potatoes they produced were unsold. Moreover, the farmers could not sell the potatoes they had stored in the cold storage in the hope of getting better prices. In addition, they had to calculate the storage rent.

Ripon Mia, a potato farmer in the Ramzanbeg area, said he had suffered a lot of losses last year. This year he is planting potatoes with new hope. This time he has planted potatoes in 16 bighas of land.

According to the District Agriculture Extension Department, potato was cultivated in 37,850 hectares of land in Munshiganj in the last 2020-21 Rabi season. This year, 2021-22 Rabi season has set a target of cultivating potatoes in 37,900 hectares of land. More potatoes are being cultivated in 50 hectares of land this year as compared to last year. Till last December 1 of this year, potato has been cultivated in 9,880 hectares of land in the district.

Munshiganj District Training Officer of Agriculture Extension Department ABM Wahidur Rahman told Daily Kalbela that there is sufficient stock of potato seeds this year and there is no reason for farmers to worry about the seeds. Besides, there will be no crisis of fertilizer.
