The Election Commission is preparing to hold elections to municipalities in December this year, and to union parishads, next year.

EC senior secretary Mohammad Alamgir confirmed to Bangladesh Post that from November, all the elections will be held as per the rulebooks.

He also said, “No more voting will be postponed during this period. When the election period comes, it will be held on time.”

On the coronavirus onslaught, the official also said that owing to the virus, all electoral operations had been halted for the last three and a half months. Gradually, activity has started in Bogura and Jashore by-elections in a short range of time since last July.

Meanwhile, the EC is also preparing for 250 municipal elections across the country next December.

On Sunday, the commission directed the EC secretariat to take necessary steps for municipal elections across the country.

According to EC sources, it is looking at the municipal and union council elections from next year immediately after the municipal elections. The EC is working on this upon holding these elections on time.

Following this, they are also preparing for the municipal elections at the end of this year.

It is learned that there has been a policy decision to hold general elections in November-December. A letter was sent to the Ministry of Local Government asking for the term of the current people's representatives of the municipalities for the elections and whether there is any complication in the conduct of the elections.

Due to the corona pandemic, votes in nearly 247 posts in local government bodies have been stalled. Earlier, it had also been decided to postpone the local government elections due to corona and the removal, resignation, death and expiration of the term of the district, upazila, municipality and union council.
