Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Md Shahab Uddin has said that an eminent economist, distinguished diplomat, valiant freedom fighter and former finance minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith was a pioneer of the environmental movement in Bangladesh.
“He was the founding president of Bangladesh Paribesh Andolan (BAPA), an organisation for the environmental movement. Before this, he was also the founder president of an environmentalist group called 'Parash'. If everyone is environmentally conscious like him, the overall environment of the country will improve,” said Shahab Uddin.
The environment minister said these while speaking at a programme of the unveiling and commemoration of the memorial book titled "Kingbadanti Abul Mal Abdul Muhit" at the Diploma Engineering Institute at Kakrail area in the capital as the special guest, said a press release.
Jatiya Sangsad (JS) Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury was present at the event as chief guest.
Prominent economist Kazi Khalikuzzaman Ahmad presided over the programme.
Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen, Planning Minister MA Mannan, National Professor and Muhith’s Sister Dr Shahla Khatun, Chairman of Medical Research Council Professor Dr Syed Modachir Ali, former Chairman of Privatization Commission Inam Ahmed Chowdhury and media personality Shaikh Siraj also spoke on the occasion as the special guests, the release added.
The speakers recalled Abul Mal Abdul Muhit’s contributions to the country’s economy and environment.
