Different types of crimes continue making capital Dhaka dangerous for its dwellers especially at night. The incidents of robbery, mugging and extortion have marked a sharp rise in the capital and its adjoining areas recently, creating a feeling of insecurity among the dwellers.

Apart from robbers, snatchers and extortionists, reckless driving by trucks, buses and other transports drivers at dead of the night and absence of traffic police on roads also cost the lives of people in and around the city.

The criminals choose their victims on solitary streets after observing or following them for some time at different intersections when night falls on city. And they swoop on their targets and snatch their valuables at gun point. They usually snatch mobile phone sets, laptops, other electronic devices, handbags, and ornaments from women. Therefore, it is dangerous to walk or travel around the streets of the capital Dhaka at night.

The incidents of robbery, mugging and

extortion have marked a sharp rise in the

capital and its adjoining

areas recently, creating a feeling of

insecurity among the dwellers

Two Indian students fell victim to muggers at Mouchak Market intersection on January 30 last when they were passing by the way. The criminals looted away cash money, cell phone sets and other belongings from the students at gun point. A gang of seven armed goons riding a microbus also committed mugging at Zigatola, Paltan and four other strategic points in the city on the same night. With the help of Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras footage plainclothes police arrested the seven members of the organised gang.

In the wake of growing crime graph, capital Dhaka and other important cities will be brought under the ‘Safe City Project’ soon. Some 16,000 modern and high-tech CCTV cameras will be installed along 6,000 kilometers of road in Dhaka to identify criminals with their photos from their national identity (NID) cards and o keep the capital Dhaka safe.

A project titled ‘Development of Dhaka City Digital Monitoring System’ under the government’s Safe City project is going to be implemented soon. Besides, Dhaka Metropolitan Police has also taken another project to install CCTV cameras at 500 points in Dhaka South City.

We think the camera system will work to control mugging, robbery, extortion, militant and terrorist attacks, theft, and murders, as well as to detect vehicle movement errors. And the cameras will recognize the faces of criminals and allow law enforcers to locate their positions. Besides, the traffic system will also be controlled through the CCTV cameras.

The law enforcement agencies must take adequate security measures including intensive surveillance alongside deployment of adequate number of polices immediately. Therefore, capital Dhaka will be made a safe city for its dwellers.
