At least 30 people were stabbed to death and many other people were wounded by the different organised gangs of muggers in last one year and six month in the capital Dhaka. The muggers attacked and stabbed police constable Moniruzzaman Talukder in the capital’s Farmgate area on July 1.Moniruzzaman was pronounced dead shortly after the attack.

At least 482 incidents of mugging and robberies took place in the capital in the last one year and six months in the city, according to media reports.Members of different law enforcement agencies and cops arrested 2,438 members of different professional mugger gangs, including their leaders last year. They are also often conducting massive crackdown against muggers at different parts of the capital. But the armed snatchers and hardened criminals have made a comeback amid police raids and crackdown.

A feeling of insecurity has already gripped the commuters, making many of them unsafe to walk alone in the city’s roads, streets, lanes and by-lanes after dusk and even in the broad day light. We people living in the capital city may fall prey to the armed muggers anytime while we will be crossing some places that have been earmarked as ‘hotspots of mugging’.

The law enforcement agencies must

intensify police patrolling, increase

check posts and devise static security

 measures in the capital immediately

The armed muggers equipped with fire arms and sharp weapons are roaming and looting everything like money, valuables including cell phone sets, laptop other electronic devices, handbags, and ornaments from the helpless victims almost every day.

Police do not have any accurate statistics of how many snatching incidents occur in the city per day or month as most victims are reluctant to file complaints with police stations to avert possible hassles. As a result, a large number of the incidents of mugging do not come to the attention of the police.

The muggers usually prey on rickshaw passengers at dawn and after the dusk using microbus and private car. These organised criminals haunt the passengers of CNG auto-rickshaw by cutting the backside of CNG-driven auto-rickshaw since dusk to till midnight when the passengers use mobile phones or laptops.Besides, the muggers snatch mobile phone sets from the passengers seated beside the windows of buses when those are stopped during traffic signals at various intersections.

The law enforcement agencies must intensify police patrolling, increase check posts and devise static security measures in the capital immediately. Not only in the capital, there are also hotspots in Gazipur, Savar and Narayanganj where mugging incidents are taking places every day.Besides, mugging in other major cities, including Chittagong, Rajshahi, Khulna and Sylhet is also showing an upward trend for the last few days. Therefore, beefing up security measures has become the need of the hour and no compromise should be made in this regard.
