MSC, Abahani into quarters

Reigning champions Mohammedan Sporting Club (MSC) and runner-up Abahani Krira Chakra reached the last eight from Group B of the 35th edition of the Federation Cup Football on Tuesday.

MSC won over the Gopibagh outfit Brother Union (BU) by 2-1 goals at Sheikh Fazlul Haque Mani Stadium, Goplaganj, while Abahani thrashed Chittagong Abahani by 3-0 at Bashundhara Kings Arena Stadium on the day. Both teams won two matches and secured six points. Abahani is in the top position in goal average.

The Sky Blue Brigade scored nine goals, while the Black & Whites scored four in two outings. The other two teams, Chittagong Abahani and Brothers Union, have received no points from the same number of outings.

BU and the Port City Club have a chance to reach quarterfinals as the third team.

The match between the two teams will depend on who will join the knockout stage.

Meanwhile, Abahani had to wait for 43 minutes to break the deadlock. Abahani’s Brazilian forward, Bruno Rocker, scored with a powerful shot into the box.

Abahani scored the margin just after the interval. Nigerian forward Emeca scored for the team in the 47th minute. Forward Washington, who scored a hat-trick against Broither Union, scored 83rd minute of the match for Abahani.

On the other hand, the Black & Whites earned a hard-fought win over BU. The first half was goalless.

MSC tried to break the deadlock, but their strikers failed to score. Striker Shourav scored in the 66th minute of the match. Brother’s Uzbekistan forward equalized just three minutes later.

Midfielder Jafor Iqbal scored the winning goal for MSC in the 85th minute.
