MPO teachers to hold grand rally in city on Aug 13

The alliance for nationalization of MOP-listed education has called for a large-scale rally in Dhaka on August 13, demanding full nationalization of MPO-listed institutions and the immediate release of promised benefits.

The rally will begin at the National Press Club, followed by a march to the Secretariat. The alliance has urged teachers and staff from MPO-listed schools and colleges nationwide to participate, asking each institution to send at least five representatives.

In 2018, after a prolonged movement, the government granted MPO teachers a 5% annual salary increment and a 20% festival bonus—but fell short on its pledge to fully nationalize their status. Despite repeated assurances, the promise remains unfulfilled.

Recent talks with the caretaker government’s education adviser have raised hopes, with commitments to increase the festival bonus to 25% and include house rent, medical, and recreation allowances in the upcoming budget. However, the crucial gazette notification has yet to be issued.

The alliance has set August 10 as the deadline for publication and warned of intensified protests if the government delays.

Leaders suspect that a nationwide transport strike scheduled for August 12 may be aimed at disrupting rally preparations. “This could be an attempt to suppress our democratic right to protest,” said alliance convener Principal Md. Main Uddin.

Speakers at the event will include Akhtar Hossain (NCP Member Secretary), Faisal Mahmud Shanto (NCP Education Wing), and political figures Hasnat Abdullah and Sarjis Alam.

“We’ve waited long enough,” said Uddin. “If our demands are ignored, we will escalate the movement. This rally will be the beginning of a stronger phase.”
