Move to extend entry age limit for govt jobs needed

The longstanding demand for increasing the age limit for entering public sector jobs in Bangladesh is gaining renewed attention. Job-seekers and various advocacy groups have called for raising the entry age to 35, reflecting changes in average life expectancy, delayed education timelines and the growing competitiveness of the job market. The government is now actively considering increasing the entry age and the retirement age. This potential shift could significantly impact the country's structure and efficiency of public service. 

The country’s most public sector jobs currently have an entry age limit of 30, with retirement at 59. These age limits have drawn criticism over the years, particularly in light of the varying age thresholds for other government roles. Given the inconsistencies, there has been rising pressure to standardise and modernise the age limits in line with the evolving needs of public administration and the growing life expectancy of the population. 

In response to the demands, led by former caretaker government adviser Abdul Muyeed Chowdhury, the government has formed a commission tasked with public sector reform. 

The commission’s mandate includes evaluating the need to revise age-related regulations for government jobs. This comes when the country’s public sector is venturing into complex, specialised fields such as nuclear research, space exploration and advanced information technology. These sectors often require experienced professionals. Increasing entry and retirement age could help the government attract and retain the best talent, thereby enhancing the quality of public administration.

A reasonable increase in the entry age and the retirement age would align Bangladesh’s public sector employment policies more closely with modern life expectancy and workforce demands. However, the government must ensure that changes serve the broader goals of improving public sector efficiency, fostering innovation and providing equitable opportunities for all.
