The government’s move to enact a new law will curb road crash and bring discipline and order to the country’s highways. We think stricter enforcement of the new proposed law must be ensured and those who will violate the rules will be dealt severely.
Plying of unfit vehicles and their unhealthy race on the highways and roads must be stopped. Country’s highway has become a virtual death trap for the travellers as the number of crashes and deaths is increasing. In 2020 about 6,000 people were killed and 8,500 were injured in nearly 5,000 road accidents across the country.
A report published in this daily on Saturday says the Cabinet gave the final approval to the draft of Highways Act, 2021 in order to have a full-fledged law replacing a century-old small law in this regard.

We are worried that accidents and fatalities are on the rise despite the deployment of police check posts in accident-prone areas to curb speeding. About 43 per cent of the total road accidents take place on the highways in the country, says a study.
Desperate driving, plying of small vehicles and motorcycles, absence of service lanes, dangerous turns and highway-side infrastructures, shops and kitchen markets are the main reasons for accident on highways.

We think when the enactment of the proposed law will be ensured the highways will be safe and secure for all travellers and transport employees and workers.
Besides, lawmakers and local administration must play key role to free the highways and roads from all sorts of grabbing and encroachment. We the general people also have a responsibility in this regard and we all will have to perform our duty properly when we will be on roads or highways.
