Chief Justice wants a long-term plan

The Chief Justice intends to adopt a long-term plan to update the judicial system of Bangladesh, underlining the importance of establishing and strengthening an effective, independent and objective judiciary aiming to resolve the problems in the judiciary. 

From this point of view, Chief Justice Obaidul Hassan is looking for a way forward to dynamically modernize the judicial system. He said that he will garner opinions and proposals from every stakeholder step by step to prepare a long-term plan for the judiciary.

He said this in a views-exchange meeting with eminent legal experts, the current and former Attorney Generals, Presidents and Secretaries of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA). 

The meeting was held at the conference room of the SCBA on Thursday (October 20, 2023) with the aim to formulate a long-term judicial plan. 

The long-term plan would seek to make the judicial system more accessible to the people of the country. The Chief Justice heard and solicited opinions and suggestions from the jurists at the meeting. 

Judges of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court Justice M Enayetur Rahim, Justice Md Ashfaqul Islam, Justice Md Abu Zafor Siddique and Justice Jahangir Hossain; eminent jurists Dr Kamal Hossain and Barrister M Amir-Ul-Islam,    Attorney General AM Amin Uddin; President of Supreme Court Bar Association Md Momtaz Uddin Fakir and secretary of SCBA Md Abdun Nur Dulal; former attorney generals AF Hasan Ariff, and Fida M Kamal; former presidents of SCBA Barrister Mainul Hosein and Yusuf Hossain Humayun; and Additional Attorney Generals SM Munir, Sk Md Morshed Mohammad, and Mehedi Hassan Chowdhury, took part in the views-exchange meeting, among others. 

At the meeting, the jurists gave their opinion for a vibrant judiciary. They said that they would also give written suggestions to Chief Justice Obaidul Hassan, who presided over the meeting, on this issue.

Supreme Court’s Spokesperson and Appellate Division Registrar Mohammad Saifur Rahman confirmed the matter. 

Chief Justice Obaidul Hassan has laid emphasis on constant effort, effective mechanism and establishing a process for solving the problems of the judiciary. He appealed for cooperation from the senior jurists of the country in the meeting. 

Referring to everyone’s desire for a beautiful, capable and active judiciary, the Chief Justice in the meeting said, “I know that our plan will not be perfect, but there must be a plan for the way forward. We will leave this plan as a guideline for future generations. Much of this will help them on their way.”Justice Obaidul Hassan took oath as the 24th Chief Justice of Bangladesh on September 26.
