Moulvibzar town to be traffic and garbage-free

Moulvibazar Municipality has convened a special law and order coordination meeting to make the city of Moulvibazar traffic-free, sidewalk free of hawkers and fair market management. The municipal authorities will start a campaign to free the sidewalks in the city from September 6.

The coordination meeting was held at noon on Thursday at Moulvibazar Municipality Board Room. Municipal Mayor Fazlur Rahman presided over the function while Superintendent of Police Mohammad Zakaria was the chief guest while Additional Deputy Commissioner Tania Sultana was the special guest. Representatives of local administration, businesspersons, journalists, transport workers and civil society were present.

Sadar Circle Additional Superinten­dent of Police Ziaur Rahman, Municipal Councilor Masud Ahmed, Moulvibazar Press Club General Secretary Panna Dutta, District Transport Workers Union President MdFazlul Ahmed, businessmen Syed Munim Ahmed Rimon, Jahed Ahmed Chowdhury, Bachchu Mia, Badrul Islam and others also spoke at the discussion.

Speakers at the meeting said that in order to build an aesthetically clean city, the city's Chaumuhana, Saifur Rahman Road, Paschimbazar, Kusumbagh Point and Sreemangal Road need to be cleared of traffic. Illegal car parking has to be stopped. The sidewalks of every road in the city should be vacated and the broken slaps should be replaced with suitable ones for pedestrian movement. Moulvibazar Municipality should plan to make a designated place for parking. There should be a designated place for hawkers. Necessary steps should be taken to stop dumping of garbage and waste in front of business establishments. Municipal Mayor Fazlur Rahman said the municipality will start work from September 6 through three teams led by municipal councilors to keep the city clean and free of sidewalks. From October 1, every business will have to keep the garbage of shop in a polythene bag. The cleaners of the municipality will bring this bag every night. Polythene bags will be distributed among the traders on behalf of the municipality. The municipal authorities will be in a tough position to build a clean and unoccupied sidewalk city. The mayor wants the cooperation of all municipal citizens including businessmen in this regard.

Additional Deputy Commissioner Tania Sultan said, "We know the problems of the city. What needs to be done to solve them has also come up in the speeches of the speakers. Appropriate initiatives and coordination are needed now. In order to implement it, especially the cooperation of traders, transport owners, workers and citizens is required”. She assured that the district administration would extend all possible cooperation in the implementation of the steps to be taken by the municipality in this regard.

Chief Guest Superintendent of Police Mohammad Zakaria spoke about the causes and solutions to traffic congestion at several notable places in the city. He also mentioned the need for change in the traffic system in the town and the plans of the district police. If these are implemented,  Moulvibazar town  will be much traffic free. The district police is planning to hold a meeting on the issue soon. However, he said that various government and non-government organizations and businessmen located along the road need to be more aware and sincere about the benefits of the citizens. The Superintendent of Police assured the overall cooperation of the district police to ensure civic amenities and security in the city.

At the end of the meeting, the mayor and guests distributed polythene bags among the traders to keep the garbage in the shop.
