A mother and her son were found brutally murdered at their residence in Hasan Nagar in the city of Sunamganj on Tuesday morning.

The victims, Farida Begum, 50, widow of Jahidul Mia from Bashiakhauri village in Shantiganj Upazila, and her son Minhazul, 20, were discovered with severe injuries inflicted by sharp weapons.

Sunamganj Sadar Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge (OC), Md Nazmul Haque, confirmed that the incident likely occurred on Monday night, although their bodies were recovered on Tuesday morning.

According to police and locals, in the morning, the housemaid of the deceased came and saw the front gate of the house open. She went inside and saw the bodies of the mother and son lying on the ground. After her screaming, locals came forward and informed the police.

Witnesses on the scene reported that the bodies bore deep wounds to their throats and other areas, suggesting a brutal attack with sharp weapons.

Farida Begum’s cousin, Sajan Mia, shared his reaction upon hearing the news, saying, “We rushed to the house as soon as we were informed. Another family was reportedly living with them, but they were not present when we arrived.”

Officer-in-Charge Nazmul Haque confirmed that investigators found both the doors and windows wide open when they arrived.

He said, “The mother and son were hacked to death, and initial findings indicate a possible motive tied to a family dispute. Our detectives are actively working to identify those responsible.”

In connection with the investigation, police have taken the housemaid into custody for questioning, hoping her insights may help uncover details leading to the perpetrators.

Meanwhile, the bodies of the victims were sent to Sunamganj Sadar Hospital for autopsy to determine the cause of death.

A team comprising district administration, police, and army officials, led by the Deputy Commissioner, visited the crime scene to assess the situation.
