Sunday was International Mother's Day observed all over the world. The occasion was a time to make mothers feel extra happy. The Day is a celebration honoring mothers and celebrating motherhood, maternal bonds and the influence of mothers in society. From planning a day out with her, to surprising her with gifts, there's plenty that one can do to show love for her.
The day has evolved into an occasion for children to honour and give presents to their hardworking mothers. While the occasion has become heavily commercialised in recent years and we now typically associate the day with buying gifts and making breakfast in bed for our mums, it has not always been linked to honouring motherhood.
Mother's Day is celebrated all around the world. It seems to be a universal thing that cultures put a day aside each year to celebrate the act of motherhood.
The day originated in the US in the 19th century and began with two American women - Julia Ward Howe and Anna Jarvis. Julia Ward sponsored Mother's Day each year in Boston around 1870 for 10 years to promote pacifism and disarmament with women.
Anna Jarvis organized the first Mother's Day in Grafton, West Virginia at St. Andrew's Methodist Church in 1908 in memory of her late mother. In 1914, the second Sunday of May was recognized as a national holiday in the US to honor mothers. To observe the Day Industries Minister Nurul Mazid Mahmud Humayun handed over Ratnagarva Mothers Award to Mother of Azad Products owner Begum Rahima Islam at Dhaka Club in the capital on Sunday.
Azad Products (Pvt) Ltd, has been organising the event since 2003. It recognises mothers whose children have become successful in their respective fields of work.
