It is disheartening to note that most of the public transports in the city are in dilapidated condition and many of them seem to be operating without any fitness certificates. It needs no mentioning that such unethical practice of operating public transports is putting lives of the passengers in danger as many of the vehicles allegedly lack safety clearance for plying the roads.
As reported by this daily on Monday, at present, most of the 30,000 buses plying on 291 routes in the capital are in dilapidated condition. Many of them run with engines which are too old or not fit. Most of the buses have no looking glass while some are running without bumper.
It is time to integrate effective and
frequent drive against vehicles
without registration and fitness
According to law, it is mandatory for a vehicle to go through fitness check-up every year and have fitness certificate renewed to ply the roads legally but in reality a large number of unfit vehicles are running with expired certificates.
A number of unscrupulous BRTA officials allegedly provide licence to the unskilled drivers and fitness certificates to the unfit vehicles without taking any test.
We cannot rebut that Mobile teams from BRTA conducts drives against unfit vehicles, but the gross presence of such vehicles on the road exposes the inefficacy of BRTA to tackle the problem. It is often seen that when BRTA launches a mobile court drive, all the unfit vehicles go off the road, and then return immediately when the drive is over. Considering the situation, BRTA should think about the effectiveness of its drive against unfit vehicles. It is time to integrate effective and frequent drive against vehicles without registration and fitness.
