The massive outbreak of dengue in 2019 that left more than 130 people dead is still looming on the minds of the people. With the season of winter nearing its end mosquitoes can once again be noticed around the capital. Other than the irritating biting of mosquitoes it is common knowledge that mosquitoes carry bacteria which can be harmful and in some cases even fatal for human beings.

It is important for the public to keep their doors and windows closed in the evening too keep mosquitoes out. Also, various incense coils can be used as a deterrent to mosquitoes at bay. But these are only as effective so long as the people are careful. In order to truly create a dent in the mosquito population of the capital it is imperative for the government to take strong handed steps to rid this menace from society.

A recent report published in this daily shows that the two city corporations of Dhaka city have been active since the beginning of January to take measures against mosquitoes. Not only dengue, but also steps have been taken to counter chikungunya cases. These might have been substantial still there are already a number of reported dengue cases in the capital.

Experts opine that in a recently conducted research more density in Aedes mosquito population was found in comparison with the preceding year’s ratio. If the situation is so dire at the beginning of the year then one can only wonder what the scenario might be like when the rainy season, the optimum breeding period of these mosquitoes, swings in.

Precaution must be taken before hand. Proper anti-mosquito drives must be conducted in the areas where mosquitoes are more prone to breed. Also, at present a number of road development work is being carried out in the capital which if left unfinished will fill up with water and can be a perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes. This needs to be addressed by the authorities concerned as well.
