More than half of the Padma Multipurpose Bridge is now visible following the installation of the 21st span on Tuesday. A total of 3150 metres of the 6150-metre bridge is now visible reality. The span has been installed on the pillar number 32, which is first one of the 11 specially made pillars. As the soil at the bottom of the river is not suitable for rearing pillars, the authority concerned have constructed those 11 pillars following special system.
The weather being favorable, engineers concerned easily fit the large iron frame over the span. If everything goes on right track, the authority concerned is hopeful to install two more spans within this month. On December 31 last year, the 20th span was installed at Mawa point making 3 kilometres out of total 6.15km of the main structure of the bridge visible. A total of three spans have been installed in December.
A total of 41 spans will be installed on 42 concrete pillars to complete the bridge. Concerned officials said they have plan to install at least three spans each month. In the multipurpose double-deck bridge, trains will run through the lower deck while the road will be on the upper layer of the bridge. When the construction of the bridge is completed, the capital will be directly connected with 21 southern districts through road and rail.
The Bridge is being conducted by Chinese company Major Bridge Engineering Co Ltd and the river training work is being done by Sino Hydro Corporation of the same country.
