For the first time, the Thakurgaon Sadar Upazila administration has launched a month-long swimming training programme for students.
The training was officially inaugurated on Friday morning at the Sadar Upazila Parishad pond by Additional Deputy Commissioner (General), Mehnaz Ferdous. Also present at the event were Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md Khairul Islam and other local officials.
A total of 30 students from various educational institutions are participating in the programme. The sessions will be held twice a week, and organisers expect the students to gain essential swimming skills by the end of the month.
Local residents expressed their appreciation for this first-of-its-kind initiative in Thakurgaon. They believe the training will not only increase interest in swimming among children and teenagers but will also help prevent tragic incidents such as drowning.
Speakers at the inauguration highlighted that swimming is more than just a sport – it is a vital life-saving skill. Plans are in place to expand the programme in future, with the goal of reaching more students across the district.
