Incessant raining across the country over the past few days is a welcome reprieve for the citizens, providing a much-needed respite from the sweltering heat. According to Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) prediction heavy to very heavy rainfall may occur in many parts of the country in the next several days.

“Due to active monsoon over Bangladesh heavy (44-88 mm) to very heavy (89mm) rainfall is likely to occur at places over Rangpur, Mymensingh, Sylhet, Barishal and Chattogram divisions during next 24hrs commencing 10:00am Monday”, a BMD bulletin said on Monday. “Due to very heavy rainfall landslide may occur at places over the hilly regions of Chittagong division”, it added.

The southwest monsoon, which occurs from the month of June to September, is primarily responsible for the productivity of the kharif crops in Bangladesh. The agricultural sector is therefore heavily dependent on the arrival of this monsoon.
