Monirul Islam, chief of Counter-Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit under Dhaka Metropolitan Police, has been made the chief of the Special Branch (SB) of police following his promotion as Additional Inspector General.
The police-1 branch of the public security department of the home ministry issued a gazette notification in this regard on Sunday. Monirul Islam has replaced SB Chief Additional Inspector General Mir Shahidul Islam.
SB chief Mir Shahidul Islam is going to retirement today (Monday). He has already had a farewell meeting with the Prime Minister on Thursday last.
Earlier, Monirul Islam, additional commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), took over as the head of the Counter-Terrorism and Transnational Crime Unit of the police on February 16, 2016.
Monirul Islam was born on June 15, 1970. He was graduated in British law from the University of Northumbria. He joined the Bangladesh Police in 1995 as an ASP through Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS) examination. He served in the Intelligence Branch for 9 years and in the Special Branch for two years. He is also one of the founding officers of CTTC.
Monirul Islam, the 15th batch BCS officer of the police, joined the DMP in 2009 as Deputy Commissioner (Detective, South). After that he worked in DMP as Joint-Commissioner and Additional Commissioner. His role in curbing militancy has been praised. He has received the Bangladesh Police Medal and the President's Police Medal in recognition of his work.
