Mongla is the second largest seaport in the country. Thousands of vehicles regularly travel to Mongla port. However, the number of vehicles carrying goods is high.
On the Khulna-Mongla highway, the condition of the road from the bridge area to Digraj Bazar area is dilapidated. There is no such thing as a road. Thousands of vehicles are constantly plying on this important road filled with mud, water and ditches.
The drivers claim that they drive on this road with their lives in hand. The situation is so bad that it doesn't take long for the car with the goods to overturn if it moves a little from side to side. Authorities claim they are renovating every day but are losing road capacity due to overload.
When it rains a little, mud is being formed in ditches. Hundreds of heavy goods vehicles are passing through it every day at risk. Drivers have to suffer in this. The idea of such a situation on the only road to the country's second largest Mongla port is not at all acceptable.
In this regard, Md Farid Uddin, Executive Engineer, Roads and Highways Department said, the length of Bagerhat on Khulna-Mongla National Highway is 30 km. Within this 30 km, 5 km road from Belai Bridge to Digraj Bazar has been damaged. It is not possible to repair with bitumen in the rainy season. It is not possible to work in the rainy season, but we are constantly doing regular work so that the travel problem is alleviated to some extent.”
“However, at the end of the rainy season, we will do routine maintenance work. We will start this routine maintenance work next December.” He further said that overload is the main reason for the premature deterioration of this national road.
