Syed Abed Ali, a former driver of the PSC chairman arrested in connection with question paper leaks from the Public Service Commission (PSC), in his personal Facebook profile said the money he earned from question leak, has been spent in the path of the Almighty Allah. His personal Facebook profile shows he is always busy with various social, political and cultural activities and charity.
Most of the national dailies, news agencies, portal newspaper and television channels ran several stories headlined “Money spent in the path of Allah, It is a duty to satisfy Allah”. Abed Ali and his family members had a luxurious lifestyle. He has been the subject of widespread discussion on social media. He has assets worth at least Tk 500 million.
We have observed that moral degradation has reached to such a point that this kind of incidents are happening repeatedly. The recent incidents of big crime like question leaks from PSC, corruption, misuse of power and moral degradation in government institutions, departments and offices are very unfortunate, and alarming.
The Constitution of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, enacted under the leadership of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, has ensured that our educated and qualified youths have the right to get job through a tough competitive recruitment test.
The dishonest acts by a section of government high ups, employees, drivers and peons have deeply shocked us and the young generation studying in different prestigious universities. We strongly condemn and protest such crime and unethical business practices by some people for their role in helping dishonest people to get a prestigious job like BCS cadre. Crime, corruption, misuse of power and unethical businesses are created when moral degradation starts. The organised syndicate and vested interest groups who commit such crime must be condemned and boycotted socially and punished severely.

Apart from ministries concerned, departments and institutions, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), the national anti-graft watchdog, should start hunting down those who have amassed wealth illegally through committing various corruptions and irregularities.
We believe there is no alternative to make the country free from all sorts of crime, corruption and all the government and non-government organisations should come forward and work together to attain the cherished goal. The ACC must take steps so that the corrupt individuals are punished properly.
It is very crucial to prevent corruption immediately to make the country’s ongoing trend of development work sustainable. We do not want to see a person like ex-driver Abed Ali prospering in the society. Apart from the national anti-graft watchdog, people from all walks of life will also have to build a corruption-free country through forging social resistance against the corruption.
Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the father of the nation had said corruption must be stopped...famers and labourers are not involved in corruption, but educated people indulge in corruption. Bangabandhu also had asked public officials to remain honest.
In this regard, the community and the young generation will have to be empowered so that they can raise their voice against corruption. Apart from these, both the government and non-government service-delivery activities must be transparent and accountable for freeing those from crimes and corruption. No corrupt element must go unpunished and no graft suspect be spared. However, we have noticed that a number of corruption suspects still remain untouched or have fled overseas.
Therefore, we think if the ‘big fishes’ behind all illegal businesses are not netted or brought to book immediately, the small fishes will also be encouraged to become like big ones.
