Bangladesh government is committed to hold a transparent and credible election, Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen told US Secretary of State Antony Blinken in Washington. Antony Blinken met Tuesday with Bangladesh’s Minister for Foreign A.K. Abdul Momen.
When Blinken said that the US wants to see a free and fair election in Bangladesh, Momen replied of course, this is his country’s objective too. Momen also said Bangladesh always welcomes election observers from the US. He highlighted three measures taken by the government -- introducing photo identity cards to check fake votes, transparent ballot box and formation of an independent Election Commission. Bangladesh Foreign Minister also pointed to the role of the opposition political parties, saying all opposition parties must come forward; they must commit to hold a free, fair election.
We are notifying that diplomats, mostly from Western countries, visited Bangladesh and discussed the next general elections in Bangladesh, likely to be held in early 2024. Bangladesh also made its stand clear repeatedly that as its election commission is very much independent, the incumbent government will perform its routine duty during the next national polls
We envisage that therelationship
between Bangladesh and USA will
go far beyond strategicpartnership
through this latest meeting between
AK Abdul Momen and Antony
Blinken in Washington
The next national election will be held as per the country’s Constitution. Democratic practice has prevailed in the country which is why Bangladesh has seen massive development. But Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) does not appreciate the democratic system upheld in the country as the party has only two qualities – stealing votes and killing people.
BNP leaders now are hatching conspiracy to thwart the next parliamentary polls. In the name of the caretaker government, they are now waging movement for changing the Constitution and they want to halt the country’s development and progress.
But there is no provision of caretaker government in the Constitution. We hope foreign countries will not give prescriptions to Bangladesh on democracy and human rights as these are deeply rooted in the country’s DNA. All foreign countries should lay emphasis on greater efforts to strengthen their relations with Bangladesh.
Countrymen believe the next general election will be a free, fair, transparent and inclusive one under the independent election commission. We hope the dream of creating anarchy in the country will never come into reality for troublemakers as people cast votes to see development.
Bangladesh has friendly relations with the United States as the two countries are working from their respective positions on bilateral and common issues as well as multilateral issues. There is an opportunity to resolve any issue through talks. We envisage that the relationship between Bangladesh and USA will go far beyond strategic partnership through this latest meeting between AK Abdul Momen and Antony Blinken in Washington.
