Amid widespread protest in India following the passage of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill in parliament, Bangladesh Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen has cancelled his planned three-day visit to the neighbouring country.

The foreign ministry confirmed about the minister's visit cancellation on Thursday.

The Bangladesh delegation is now being led by a director general of the foreign ministry.

The foreign minister was scheduled to leave the country on Thursday afternoon to attend the sixth edition of Indian Ocean Dialogue (IOD) to be held in New Delhi on Friday.

During the visit, Abdul Momen was scheduled to hold a bilateral meeting with his Indian counterpart External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar on the sideline of the dialogue. The foreign minister is likely to visit India next month, the official said.

Despite repeated attempts, the minister could not be reached for comment on cancellation of his trip.
