Sorwer Hossen. Moheshpur: Sweets are an integral part of the Bangladeshi cuisine. Every region of the country has a signature sweet variety that not only enriches people's taste buds but also remains a unique cultural heritage of that region.
In this way, when the name of Jhenaidah district comes to someone's mind, among many things, Maheshpur’s rasgulla, a delicious variety of sweets made with curdled milk, automatically comes to mind.
The reputation of Rasgulla, a special sweetmeat of Maheshpur in the district, is spreading across the country for its taste and price. Per piece rasgullah is sold at Tk 3 only.
Although small in size, this rasgullla is as tasty as the sweet meat from big stores. It is made from pure milk and melts in mouth. It does not contain any adulteration, artificial colors or added fragrances.
According to local sources, Sumal Ghosh, a resident of Shibandpur village in Maheshpur upazila, has been selling his own homemade sweet meat for more than three decades.
Every morning, he goes out on his bicycle and travels around different areas of Maheshpur to sell rasgullla.
Earlier, each rasgullla was sold for Tk 2 , now it is being sold for Tk 3 . Even though the price has increased slightly, the demand from buyers has not decreased, but has increased.
He sells about 1,000 pieces of rasgullla every day from morning to evening. His family runs on that income.
Local buyer Ashraful Alam said, it is truly incredible to get such delicious rasgullla for Tk 3.
The price is low; the taste is also amazing. Another buyer, school teacher Abdar Razzak, said, Sumal Ghosh's rasgullla is much more authentic and delicious than the rasgullla from big shops.
That is why no matter how many sweet shops there are in the market, people flock to him.
Local shopkeeper Monirul Islam, a resident of Maheshpur, said, Sumal Ghosh's rasgullla is now a popular name in the area.
The number of customers is increasing every day as they get quality sweets at low prices. Sumal Ghosh said, "Less profit, more sales is my business policy. If I can sell 1,000 pieces a day, my family will be able to survive. By the grace of God, people are liking the taste of my sweets, this is my biggest achievement."
