Theatre troupe Mohakal Natya Sampraday will stage a show of ‘Sraban Tragedy’ at the auditorium of Officers’ Club, Dhaka yesterday.

Written by Anan Zaman and directed by Ashiq Rahman Leeon, the play, which was staged marking the National Mourning Day, portrays the political tragedy that took place during the last days of the Bangla month Sraban (August) in 1975 when the founding president of the country Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, along with his family members, was killed by some army men with the support of local and foreign vested groups.

The experimental play presents the tragedy in a narrative style, where a narrator unfolds the story and introduces the actions on stage.

Political and military leaders of the newly-independent Bangladesh like Tajuddin Ahmad, Ziaur Rahman, Khondaker Mostaq Ahmad, Colonel Faruq, Taheruddin Thakur, and many others appear as characters in the play.

The play also features Mujib’s family members like Sheikh Kamal, Sheikh Russel, Sultana Kamal and others.

Though the play is based on the August 15 incident, in fragmentary flashback scenes, it narrates the biography of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman- his family and political career.

The play stars Mir Zahid Hasan, Mir Nahid Ahsan, Kabir Ahmed, Faruq Ahmed Sentu, Poly Biswas, Samiul Jiban, Sumaiya Taiyum Nisha, Piyasi Jahan and others.
