To put an end to the catastrophe on level crossings, frequent train derailment incidents and accidents across the country, Bangladesh Railways has initiated a comprehensive modernisation of its signal system, with the aim to transition entirely to broad gauge tracks by 2050. The railway authorities expect that this initiative will help eliminate collisions and enhance overall safety.
The Bangladesh Railway DG acknowledged the recent increase in train collisions, attributing them to faulty signal systems. Until 2030, Bangladesh Railway will procure locomotives for meter gauge, but after that, it will cease its acquisition.
We think it is a good initiative indeed. We are concerned over frequent train derailment incidents and accidents across the country as many people die and receive serious injuries. Besides, unmanned level crossings have turned into potential death traps for people across the country.

The rail-related fatalities are on the rise as most level crossings either authorised or unauthorised still remain unprotected. Unmanned level crossings and poor condition of tracks are attributed to train accidents.
We have noticed that lack of proper signal system, awareness and poor maintenance and monitoring at level-crossings, including railway bridges, continue causing the accidents. Country’s many level crossings in both the east and west zones of Bangladesh Railway are operating without proper signal system, gatemen, intensifying the risk of level crossing for movements of vehicles and passerby.
Apart from these, dilapidated condition of the railway tracks, faulty interlocking and signaling system are also causing frequent train derailment and even deadly accidents. As these are making the train journey risky, the railway ministry must take special measures for ensuring security of rail service.
The authorities concerned will make some serious efforts if it really wants to do something for the safety of passengers and passerby. We think government’s initiative to procure new coaches, locomotives and engines is not enough for the railway sector’s development and ensure safe journey.
Therefore, apart from digital signal system, rail lines and bridges will have to be modernised and it is urgently needed to repair the dilapidated railway tracks. The government is working to establish a rail network across the country for providing transportation to people and goods at a cheaper rate safely. The railway authorities should inspect, repair and maintain railway tracks to keep the trains running smoothly and safely. The authorities concerned should repair and modernise the railway tracks and bridges to make the services safer, better and faster immediately.
