We welcome the new BRTC bus service launched on Dhaka-Narayanganj route by the Roads and Bridges Minister ObaidulQuader on Wednesday. This sure will come as a great relief of the thousands of commuters on that route.

We recall the success of Dhaka Chaka, introduced in Gulshan-Banani route by late Mayor AnnisulHaque, and another one launched some weeks back on Dhanmondi-New Market-Azimpur route to ease the unbearable traffic jam in the city. Passengers are already enjoying the benefit of these services. The new service was inaugurated by Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Mayor Sayeed Khokon some weeks back.

It is good news that the services will run with brand new air-conditioned BRTC buses initially as part of a plan of the Bus Route Rationalisation committee which was formed to bring city bus service under discipline. The lowest fare is Tk 10, from the first stop to the second, while the highest fare is set at Tk 30. The service is expected to phase out old dilapidated private buses from the Dhaka roads and thus minimize accidents.

We wish the BRTC buses and the

management success in bringing

discipline back on the roads and

help reduce traffic jam and

 accidents to a great extent

There is no denying that old mini buses usually run with faulty brakes, driven by untrained drivers. The maddening competition to get passengers mostly result in fatal accidents. On the other hand, the modern bus services are aimed at ensuring security and discipline and reduce traffic congestion in the busy city.

In this connection, we would like to recall the promise of the late mayor of Dhaka North Annisul Mahmud regarding introduction of circular bus service on all routes in Dhaka by replacing the dilapidated mini buses and smaller human haulers. He had successfully introduced Dhaka Chaka on Gulshan route and another service in HateerJheel area.

Dhaka Chaka has proved to be successful in bringing discipline on the roads there where previously human haulers used to create nuisance throughout the day. Now, one can see people standing in a queue with ticket in hand to board a bus.

We wish the BRTC buses and the management success in bringing discipline back on the roads and help reduce traffic jam and accidents to a great extent.
