Mobile court fines 28 people

To combat coronavirus pandemic in the country, mobile court in Thakurgaon is taking firm measures against those who are violating government’s directives. A mobile court has imposed a fine of Tk 56,300 in 28 separate cases in three upazilas of Thakurgaon district, for not abiding by the government-mandated home quarantine amid the coronavirus pandemic and also setting up shops to sell Iftar items on Saturday.

Although instructions were issued to set up temporary shops for Iftar items during Ramadan, some traders opened Iftar items shops and many were fined for going out on the streets unnecessarily.  Meanwhile, a father and a son were sentenced to imprisonment for beating a union secretary while preparing a list of needy people wholost their livelihoods due to corona.  

The incident took place in the Union Parishad of Haripur upazila of Thakurgaon district. Later, the mobile court sentenced Shawkat Ali and his son Ruhul Amin to seven days and two months of imprisonment respectively. Haripur Upazila Nirbahi Officer Abdul Karim handed down the above sentence on Saturday afternoon. 

Deputy Commissioner Dr KM Kamruzzaman Selim said, “Staying home will stem the coronavirus outbreak. Keep yourself safe, keep others safe too.” He also told stern measures in the district will continue to tackle coronavirus.

On Saturday, Thakurgaon Sadar Upazila Executive Officer Abdullah Al Mamun, Haripur Upazila Executive Officer Abdul Karim, Senior Assistant Commissioner, Executive Magistrate Sohag Shah in charge of Ranishankail Upazila, Assistant Commissioner (Land) Bohni Shikha carried out raids from 8am to 8pm in different places.

According to the Penal Code 1860 and the Infectious Diseases (Prevention, Control and Eradication) Act 2018, various individuals and businesses were punished with fines for various reasons, including keeping shops and businesses open.
