Lin-Manuel Miranda has discussed the possibility of Disney's newest animated hit Encanto going to Broadway. Encanto tells the Columbian-set musical tale of a young girl, Mirabel Madrigal, who has to face life as the only member of her family without magical powers. The film has been quickly rising in popularity since its release in November of 2021, gaining plenty of attention for its viral original songs, such as "We Don't Talk About Bruno." Encanto's music is written by Miranda and Germaine Franco, while the film's voice cast stars Stephanie Beatriz, John Leguizamo, Diane Guerrero, Jessica Darrow, and many more. A huge amount of Encanto's popularity has come from its success on TikTok. Since its release, many of Encanto's songs, such as "We Don't Talk About Bruno," "Surface Pressure" and "The Family Madrigal," have been used in countless different viral clips. This has lead to the popularity of the Encanto soundtrack nearly transcending the film itself, becoming its own phenomenon.
Given this overwhelmingly positive reception to its music, it's no wonder that Encanto has been nominated for both Best Original Score and Best Original Song at the 2022 Oscars. Recently, Miranda was asked in an interview with E News if he thinks Encanto will make the transition to the stage via Broadway. The composer admitted that the idea has already crossed his mind, stating that he thinks "[Encanto] weirdly lends itself well" to the stage.

Miranda went on to explain that not all animated musicals are necessarily suited to a stage musical adaptation, citing Moana (for which he also wrote much of the music) as an example. However, Miranda also revealed that he already has plans for a finale number for a stage version of Encanto.
