The Ministry of Education is set to request university leaders to engage with student organizations to ensure a safe and smooth resumption of academic activities. This announcement was made by Education Minister Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury Nowfel, as conveyed by MA Khayer, the ministry’s public relations officer.

On July 16, the University Grants Commission (UGC) declared that all public and private universities would remain closed until further notice. This decision was driven by safety concerns following widespread student protests advocating for reforms to the quota system.

The closure affects not only universities but also medical, textile, and engineering colleges, which are affiliated with the universities. Prof. Tapan Kumar Sarker, chairman of the Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education, Dhaka, added that the Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) and other equivalent examinations have been postponed until August 1.

In a press release, UGC Secretary Dr. Ferdous Zaman confirmed that all academic activities, including classes and examinations, are suspended until further notice. The UGC’s action aligns with the education ministry’s directives aimed at addressing safety issues.

The Ministry of Education’s strategy involves asking university leaders to hold discussions with student organizations to develop plans for a safe return to classes. The goal is to create an environment where academic activities can resume without compromising the safety and well-being of students and staff.

The ministry believes that these consultations will help in devising effective measures to ensure a secure educational setting.
