Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL) Managing Director MAN Siddique said that the Metrorail is ready for inauguration on the Uttara to Agargaon route on any day in the fourth week of December.

He said, “The date will be fixed only when the Prime Minister gives time. Initially, 10 trains will run.”

He told reporters in an event organised by JICA at the Metrorail Exhibition and Information Centre at Diabari Depot in the capital on Monday after inspecting the progress of the project.

Siddique said, “Time has been sought from the Prime Minister for the inauguration of Metrorail. The date will be fixed as soon as she gives time. There are 12 trains in the fleet. 10 of these trains will run initially. There will be two standbys. Two sitting trains will be used in case of any problem on the Metrorail route. Agargaon to Kamalapur route will be launched in December 2023. Then 24 trains will run in full phase.”

Siddique said primarily the train will run for a specific period with a limited number of passengers and the frequency between two trains will be a little high, but the metro rail service will go into full fledged operation in two or three months of its inception, complying with the international standard.

Noting that the metro rail service will be launched up to Motijheel by December 2023 and Kamalapur by June 2025, Siddique said a train from Uttara north station will reach Agargaon station within 20 minutes while it will take only 40 minutes to reach Kamalapur station once the service goes into a full operation.

Speaking on the occasion, Ichiguchi Tomohide of JICA said the launching of the operation of MRT Line-6 from Uttara to Agargaon this year is a great achievement of the golden jubilee of the relationship between Bangladesh and Japan.

He also said the metro rail service will play a pivotal role in reducing traffic congestion and environmental pollution on a greater scale in the capital city while the service will provide a safe travel environment for women.

Later, the journalists were taken to the Uttara north station where the officials concerned showed and briefed them on the process of riding on a metrorail in practical terms.

Earlier at the outset of the programme, two documentaries were screened on the metro rail project and how to ride on the train and behave in the station area.
