The construction of Dhaka metro rail project is expected to complete by late 2021 as its works is now going on in full swing. The government has decided to inaugurate it after completion of the construction of the project covering the rail tracks from Uttara to Motijheel marking the nation’s 50 years of Victory celebration on December 16 in 2021, sources said.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina instructed to complete the project on time. According to latest Dhaka Mass Transit Company Ltd (DMTCL) data, the 67.97 percent of first phase of the project namely Dhaka Mass Rapid Transit (MRT-6) from Uttara to Agargaon has be completed until January tils year.
The second phase from Agargaon to Motijheel, started from 01 August 2018, has progressed nearly 36 percent so far with the total project witnessing a 40.36 percent overall progress. The 20.10km long MRT-6 route from Uttara phase to Motijheel is being implemented at a cost of Tk 219.85 billion. It is expected to end by June 2024.
The development came at a project implementation committee (PIC) meeting at the DMTCL office recently, officials said. Once completed, the MRT-6 will carry 60,000 passengers an hour reducing travel time from Uttara to Motijheel to less than an hour. Of total cost Tk 220 billion, Japan International Cooperation Agency is funding Tk 165.95 billion while the government providing the rest.
