Mercury drops further in Rajshahi, sufferings of people mount

Temperature in Rajshahi dropped further as the Meteorological department recorded 8.5 degree Celsius temperature, the lowest one in the season in Rajshahi on Sunday early morning. Earlier on Saturday morning, the temperature was 9.1 degree Celsius which was also the lowest temperature of the season while the highest temperature of the day was 19.3 deg Celsius.    

According to the Rajshahi Meteorological Office, a mild-cold wave is blowing throughout the district as the temperature dropped below 10 deg C. On December-29 last the lowest day temperature was 9.4 deg C in Rajshahi. Afterwards, the temperature was above 10 deg C but from Saturday the temperature dropped below 10 deg C. A bone throbbing cold is felt in Rajshahi due to the mild cold wave associated with cool wind. Low income groups of people are seen to throng at the warm cloth stores beside the footpath. Many were also seen to keep their bodies warm by burning trash and leaves road-side. 

Anowara Begum of Chhto Bongram area and Merina Begum Buli of Maskatadighi area along with some other women were seen to stand in queue in front of the bhuban Mohan Park of the city around 7-30 AM. They informed, today ( Sunday) the sky was clear with sunshine. Though the intensity of cold is still unbearable. They said, the truck laden with rice and wheat of the Department of Food will come at 9-00 AM on the spot and they were in queue to purchase the food even one and a half hour earlier. They were praising the government's step to supply food at a very low cost. ' Many poor people like us are surviving by purchasing and eating low cost food being distributed by the government' they added.

Rajib Hossain (25), a rickshaw puller at Tikapara area was seen to wrap himself with warm jackets, cashmere, socks, woolen trouser and caps. He said, due to the intense cold, hands and legs are getting stiff but he has no way but to drive the rickshaw while holding its handles firmly to earn his daily bread. 

Alal Hossain(28) at Upasahar area of the city was seen to make dough of wheat at a restaurant. He said, it was very troublesome to work with cold water but customers will soon arrive to have their breakfast that is why he has no way but to work from early in the morning under such cold weather. He added, these couples of months of winter is very tough to work. 

Kamal Hossain, Incharge of Rajshahi Meteorological Office sources informed, there was dense fog in Rajshahi for last several days and now with the removal of the fog, a mild cold-wave has clamped the district. 

He predicted the temperature is likely to remain below 10 deg Celsius till January-11.
