While addressing the nation on the eve of Pahela Baishakh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Wednesday rightly said that the country's economy will witness a complete overhaul once the mega projects are completed.

We are happy to note that the work of the four much-hyped mega projects are well underway and are expected to be completed within the next two years. When completed, we might see some key transformations in the country’s communication sector while traffic pressure in project areas will be reduced and ultimately trade and tourism will be immensely benefited.

The government must ensure proper

monitoring to attain successful completion

of all the development projects

Reportedly, Padma Bridge is going to be opened in a few months, which is expected to contribute 1.2 percent to GDP. By the end of this year, Metrorail will be launched in a 14 km section from Uttara to Agargaon. the country's first tunnel under the river Karnaphuli will be opened in Chattogram next October, while the first unit of the 1,200-megawatt Rooppur nuclear power plant, the largest development project in the country's history is expected to be commissioned by the end of the next year.

Never before in the history of Bangladesh a government could even dream of undertaking such massive projects, involving thousands of crores of taka. However, earlier, due to various obstacles, including Covid-19, funds crunch, and faulty design, most of the projects could not be materialised within the stipulated time frame.

Experts are of the opinion that when these projects are completed, the picture of the country's economy will change. These projects will not only ease communication but will also fuel the country's economic growth. Sustainable economic growth of a country depends on its sustainable infrastructure development. And to this effect it is worth mentioning that the present government has been working to change the socio-economic conditions of the people through undertaking these projects.

It needs no mentioning that successful implementation of all the mega projects will have the desired effect on the economy of the country and in order to do that sincere and coordinated efforts of all the stakeholders is a must. Also the government must try to curb corruption, ease bureaucratic tangle, and ensure proper monitoring to attain successful completion of all the development projects.
