Meeting on Durga Puja held in Sundarganj

A special meeting on law and order to celebrate the Sharadiya Durga Puja, the biggest religious festival of the Hindu Community, was held at the hall room of Sundarganj Upazila Parishad of Gaibandha district on Tuesday.

With Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md. Tariqul Islam in the chair, the meeting discussed elaborately about various development issues including overall preparatory steps and security measures for holding the forthcoming Durga Puja in the upazila smoothly.

The leaders of Bangaldesh Puja Udjapon Parishad, upazila unit, informed the meeting that 147 puja mandaps would be set up in the upazila this year and the number of puja mandaps have increased more than the previous year.

 The 5-day long festival will begin on October 20 and conclude on October 24 through the immersion of the idols, they also said.

UNO Md. Tariqul Islam urged the Hindu Community to celebrate the festival with much enthusiasm and religious fervour in the upazila and assured them of taking necessary steps in this regard.

Stern and lawful actions would be taken against the persons who will try to create anarchy and trouble at the time of puja, he also said.

The meeting was also addressed, among others, by Upazila chairman Ashraful Alam Sarker Labu, assistant commissioner (Land) Masudur Rahman, mayor of Sunfdarganj Municipality Abdur Rashid Sarker Doublu, officer-in-charge of Sundarganj Thana Azmiruzzaman, chairman of Tarapur Union Parishad Aminul Islam, local journalist Abdul Mannan Akond and convener of upazila puja celebration committee Zitendranath Sarker.

The OC of Sundarganj Thana Md. Azmiruzzaman said the district police have taken tight security measures to celebrate the forth coming Durga Puja, the biggest festival of the Hindus this year.

Talking to the BSS UNO Md. Tariqul Islam said the government had also allocated a total of 73.5 tonnes of rice for the puja mandaps of the upazila to help to celebrate the festival with festive mood.

Similar meeting was also held at the hall room of Palashbari upazila parishad at the initiative of the upazila administration today, sources said.
