Meeting held on gender-based violence

A roundtable meeting was held with journalists working in Jamalpur on the topic of stopping and preventing ongoing violence against women and children.  The meeting held under UNFPA's Gender Project was chaired by Jahangir Salim, Director of Human Resource Development of the United Nations Development Program. 

Under the supervision of Gender Project Coordinator Apoorba Chakraborty, the meeting was addressed by Liton Sarkar, Manager of the Transgender Development Project of the United Nations Development Organization, Jyotsna Akhtar, Power Project Manager, Journalist Syazad Ansari, Mostafa Manju, Fazle Elahi Maqam, Shubhra Mehdi, Tanveer Hira etc.  20 journalists participated in the meeting.  During the round table meeting held at the training center of the Development Association DTRC, in response to the questions of the journalists, it is known that 58 women and children were raped in Jamalpur from January to October this year.  

In addition, 206 women and children have been subjected to extreme torture ranging from attempted rape.  According to official data, 6 kidnappings, 44 murders, 119 deaths or suicides have occurred this year.  80% of which are women and children.  Besides, total crimes committed till October 2022 are 2 thousand 599.Sources of the development association said that along with the government, the development association has been conducting various awareness programs in addition to providing health and legal assistance to women and children who are victims of rape and violence. Through more than 2,000 courtyard meetings every month, rape, kidnapping, human trafficking, child marriage, sexual abuse, women and children  Types of violence prevention are discussed.  Apart from this, it has been conducting homework, workshops, orientation, advocacy, training programs.  In this regard, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) is implementing programs to prevent gender-based violence.  In the round table meeting, suggestions were put forward to implement various activities in government and private coordinated initiatives including effective implementation of existing laws, avoidance of lengthy trials, medical examination of women and children victims of rape and torture while maintaining appropriateness and impartiality, completion of police investigations without harassment.  In addition, it is called to play a role in the prevention of Gender Based Violence (GBV) by following humanitarian and legal issues through various media and campaigns.
