For the first time in Bangladesh, Mechanical Heart Implant has been successfully performed. Basically, this is the beginning of a new era in the treatment of heart disease in Bangladesh.
Chief Cardiac Surgeon and Director of the Cardiac Center at United Hospital Dr Jahangir Kabir placed a mechanical heart or Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) in the heart of a 42-year-old woman at United Hospital on Wednesday.
She was suffering from various heart complications for a long time known as chronic heart failure and even after she received treatment at home and abroad, her heart was becoming almost ineffective.
In the current world of medical science, the only treatment is to replace the almost dysfunctional heart with another healthy heart. However, if a healthy heart is not available as well as the heart condition continues to deteriorate rapidly, then a mechanical heart implant or LVAD remains the only option.The patient's heart regains blood circulation in the whole body. As a result, other organs in the body like kidney, liver etc. gets aS chance to heal. The only alternative for some patients with severe heart failure who are not fit for a heart transplant is LVAD, which allows them to spend a better life.
Dr. Jahangir Kabir and his colleagues successfully placed a mechanical heart called Heartmate-3 in the left ventricle of the patient's heart through a successful surgery which was conducted for about 4 hours and restored her whole heart function to normal. It is hoped that this will greatly reduce the patient's risk of death and improve the symptoms of heart failure.
