We extend our heartiest congratulations and warmest felicitations to Md Shahabuddin, one of the organisers of the Liberation War and a valiant freedom fighter, on his election as the 22nd President-elect of Bangladesh. We wish long life, sound health, peace-progress and continued wellbeing of the newly elected President Md Shahabuddin, also a retired judge and former commissioner of Anti-Corruption Commission.

The Election Commission on Monday issued a notification announcing Awami League (AL) nominee Md Shahabuddin as the President of Bangladesh. According to Presidential Election Act (Act No.27 of 1991) and announcement of Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Habibul Awal, Md Shahabuddin has been elected as the President of Bangladesh.

Earlier AL President and AL Parliamentary Party Chief the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s daughter Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina nominated Md Shahabuddin for the Presidential post. On February 19, the 22nd Presidential election will be held from 2 pm to 5 pm in the National Parliament complex.

We believe the ruling party has

chosen a well-educated, honest,

efficient and skilled

person as the country’s President

The incumbent President M Abdul Hamid assumed office on April 24, 2018 for the second consecutive term. Accordingly, his five-year tenure will end on April 23, 2023. His first five-year tenure expired on April 24, 2018 as he took office on the same date in 2013. As per the Constitution, M Hamid cannot be elected President for another term, as he was elected President for two terms. According to the country’s Constitution, members of parliament are voters in the Presidential election.

Awami League has the absolute majority in the current parliament. According to article 123 of the Constitution, the presidential election will be held between 90 and 60 days before expiry of the five-year term. Country’s people believe the ruling party has chosen a well-educated, honest, efficient and skilled person for the post of the country’s President. They also think the new President will work in accordance with the country’s Constitution after taking responsibility of the post.

The President will have to build himself as true patriot in his future journey being imbued with the spirit of the Liberation War and the belief of non-communalism. We believe the President, also the head of the state, will do everything to safeguard country’s independence, democracy and constitutional stability in future exercising the power bestowed upon him according to Constitution.
