Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Mayor Barrister Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh on Saturday expressed concern over the fire incident at the New Supermarket that ravaged the dreams of retail traders, causing immense damage to their goods, ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr.
Speaking with journalists after visiting the fire site, the DSCC mayor said repeated fire incidents are happening within a specific period, which is very concerning.
He called on all relevant bodies, including the intelligence agencies, to thoroughly investigate to find out whether there was any sabotage involved in the fire incident.
The mayor also urged the media to play a responsible role in preventing rumors and misinformation.
The Dhaka South City Corporation separately has urged people to refrain from spreading rumours regarding the fire at New Super Market in the capital.
A vested quarter is trying to link the corporation's initiative to demolish the foot over-bridge connected to the New Market with the fire at New Super Market, reads a statement Dhaka South on Saturday afternoon.
The devastating fire that broke out at the three-storey market early Saturday destroyed over 1,000 shops.
Fire Service and Civil Defence Director General Brig Gen Md Main Uddin earlier said the fire was brought under control but that it will take more time to completely extinguish the fire.
Currently, the fire service is carrying out damping work, said the director.
Firefighters were also trying to break through the roof of the three-storey market and enter it that way in an attempt to extinguish the flame.
The fire started on the second floor of New Supermarket, and the members of the Border Guard Bangladesh, fire service, police, Rapid Action Battalion, army, air force and Dhaka Wasa's water-carrying vehicles were working on the spot.
The traders blamed the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) for the annihilating fire, saying that a foot over-bridge demolition work by the city corporation caused the blaze.
However, the DSCC bushed off the claim through a press release on Saturday evening claiming that a vested group is spreading misinformation by attempting to link the two incidents.
