Massive police dragnet for rapist: IGP

Police are giving the highest priority to netting the culprit involved in the rape of a female student of Dhaka University, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Mohammad Javed Patwary, said on Tuesday. “All units of police have been working together to trace the culprit,” he said while distributing badges among the police, marking the Police Week-2020 at Rajarbagh Police Lines in the city.

Earlier on Sunday night a female student of Dhaka University was picked up by an unidentified man after she had got down from the university bus around 7pm, and raped at Kurmitola in the city. He said, investigation cannot be carried out with fixing time, but police are doing their best in this regard.
“After an incident occurs, it is not possible to trace the criminal instantly. In some cases, it takes some time to carry out the investigation. You must see whether we are taking the issue seriously and working cordially,” the IGP said.

About the physical condition of the victim, Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) Director Brig Gen Dr AKM Nasir Uddin said that the general health condition of the DU student was improving. He made the remarks while talking to a group of journalists at DMCH. He, however, said, the victim is mentally traumatized. He also informed that the hospital authorities had appointed a psychiatric specialist to talk to her and give her some advice.

The director said, "I was there with her and saw that she is healing progressively better, and regaining her strength." We hope that with doctors' advice, we will be able to discharge her within one or two days, he added. Meanwhile, the case filed by the victim's father with Cantonment police station was transferred to the Detective Branch (DB) of police on Monday night.

In another development, National Human Rights Commission Chair,Nasima Begum, visited the rape victim. According to her statement, the rape survivor can give a vivid description of the rapist. She has asked an experienced artist to help identify the accused by sketching a picture of him.
