Stock market investors have lost Tk 24,174 crore in three consecutive weeks of falling prices as they got panicky over the recent surge in Covid-19 infections and deaths.
Following the price corrections, the market capitalisation of the DSE declined 5 percent during the time to close at Tk 458,680 crore on Thursday.
Market analysts said stocks extended the losing streak for the straight three weeks as the investors were busy for panic sale amid alarming rise in Covid-19 infections and deaths in recent days.
They said the cautious investors managed money by selling their securities to avoid further losses on their portfolios as the investors begin to fear an adverse impact on the economy and earnings.
Market analysts said that investors should invest in good financial-based companies after analysis.
However, the DSE broad index (DSEX) went down by 1.06 percent or 56.69 points during the last week to settle at 5,270.53 on Thursday.
The DSEX went down below 5,300- point mark, the lowest one since 27 December 2020.
DSEX went down more than 493298 points in the past three consecutive weeks.
The DSE’s 30 Index comprising blue chips went up by 1.86 percent or 37.60 points to close at 1983.30 points and the DSE Shariah Index (DSES) decreased by 1.24 percent or 15.15 points to close at 1202.54 points during the time.
The core bourse of DSE featured a daily average turnover of 5.07 billion in the last week, which was 15.71 percent less than that of the previous week
Of 371 issues traded in last week, 91 advanced, 123 declined and 157 remained unchanged.
Some sectors witnessed price appreciation as general insurance advanced 3.5 percent, mutual fund 2.4 percent and miscellaneous 0.7 percent.
On the other hand, some sectors saw price correction as bank declined 1.0 percent, financial institutions 1.7 percent, fuel and power 1.1 percent, pharmaceuticals and chemicals 1.3 percent and telecommunication 2.2 percent.
Three indices namely CSE30, CSCX and CASPI lost 170.2 points, 101.9 points and 168.1 points respectively over the last week.
On the other hand, the port city bourse, the Chattogram Stock Exchange (CSE), also saw a rapid fall with its selective category index (CSCX) losing 101.9 points during the last week to close at 9203.06 points on Thursday.
The All-Share Price Index (CASPI) of the CSE was lower by 168.1 points during the time to close at 15256.41points on Thursday.
