Only awareness of online platform users and preventive measures can stop cyber bullying, according to Tele Consumers Association of Bangladesh (TCAB).

Convener of TCAB Md Murshidul Hoque, made the statement in a press release on the occasion of Stop Cyberbullying Day on June 18, Friday.

He said, “Posting insults to someone online, indecent comments, irrational argument and personal attacks have become a daily occurrence now. It seems that most users do not know what to say or where to say. It has been observed that most indecent posts and comments are made from fake IDs. Showbiz stars, politicians and ordinary people; no one is exempted from this kind of harassment”.

He suggested that in order to overcome this situation, massive public awareness should be created and exemplary legal action should be taken against those responsible.

He further said that, Stop Cyberbullying Day is observed around the world on the 3rd Friday of June every year since 2012 to stop harassment and abuse on the internet. The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) Bangladesh has launched an awareness campaign in Bangladesh titled hashtag My Response, ahead of the day.

“The government needs to be more involved in this regard and conduct awareness programmes. Many victims of cyber bullying become emotionally broken”, he added.

He further said, “The culture and values of the country should be given special importance to stop cyber bullying. We have to refrain from practicing such activities that goes against our culture and values. Western culture is misleading our youth day by day. Let’s all be aware and stop cyber bullying by building resistance from individual position”.
